International Paris Air Show 2017
A crystal-clear approach to aviation
Welcome to the big show. The biggest aviation show in the world that is. A global stage this big required visual assets that were sure to shine.
A topflight solution
Last year, Kitestring was contacted by GE Aviation’s creative agency, Power Agency. They were looking to create CG assets for a 3D animation and still imagery for use in GE Aviation’s pavilion at the 2017 Paris Air Show.
The Paris Air Show is the largest air show in the world with over 300,000 attendees, showcasing the latest aerospace technology in civilian and military aviation. GE’s 2017 show theme, “Digital Industrial”, incorporated all divisions of its business from engines and avionics to digital services and data analytics.
The flight plan
- Glass concept
- Glass and light effects research
- CGI-created aviation equipment
- Environmental graphics
- 3D animation
Bending the rules of nature & physics
Power Agency came to Kitestring with a glass concept for GE’s various aerospace solutions that would represent data flow and the connectivity of data to the Industrial Internet. Our CG artists were ready for the challenge.
Achieving the conceptual glass effect through CG involved bending the rules of nature and physics to produce an image that made glass appear as we expect it to, not as it may in real life. The challenge was to achieve the appeal of perfectly-clear glass, while maintaining the integrity of real-world objects.
We explored the properties of glass, lighting effects, shadows, color reflection and refraction to produce six unique images that highlighted the featured concentrations of GE Aviation. Those images were printed as large environmental graphics and brought to life in a seamless video transitioning from one concentration to the next. The video was displayed on a large LED display that wrapped around the interior of the pavilion.
